Guillain

We, from time to time, see news about a lingering war in some faraway country, the rise of a tyrannical regime, masses of displaced people that number in millions, and other effects of the injustice of our world. However, such news seems remote from our daily occupations’ prevalent peace. We pity the victims of such terrible events, yet feel out of place in their struggle, and the distance that has separated our lives and theirs already put a label on these strangers – refugees.

Then, as the network of meaning in our mind activates, intertwined images flood our consciousness. We see camps, insalubrity, and violence perpetrated by the formerly persecuted, we see people struggling to come back to a humanity we take for granted. And, in the end, this Manicheism seizes our vision; either you are civilized, brought up by ethics and common sense, or you are a poor, misguided, and unlucky refugee.

Guillain is a doctor. In the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), he climbed the ladder to work in the Health Ministry. He is a man of faith, a firm believer that peace and justice can prevail if you strive for them. He also hopes for the future and took his chance in Japan to continue building a world of better equality and awareness, a world that he dreamed about growing up as a kid in DRC. Yet, war and tyranny did not spare Guillain, as anyone and their life journey can slip into jeopardy, having no other choice than to leave family, friends, and community, to seek shelter for their life and face yet other hurdles in a distant land.
