Nahed

Who is Nahed?

Nahed was born in Tunisia, a coastal country facing the Mediterranean in North Africa, nestled between Algeria and Libya. Due to her identity as an LGBTQ person, she experienced isolation, harassment, and abuse from a young age. The influences of the Tunisian Revolution, Islam, and rigid social expectations of men and women in Tunisia contributed to shape Nahed’s personal journey. Situations with school bullies, isolation from family, and even dangerous encounters with police lead Nahed to make the decision to leave the country to protect herself. Throughout this journey through Korea, settling in Japan, Nahed employed multiple survival strategies which helped her to mitigate harassment all the way to navigating new environments in different countries.
